Fruška Gora National Park

Fruska-gora-national-park

Fruška Gora is what you get when you combine Montevergin and monasteries: a low mountain range between Novi Sad and Srijem, full of forests, vineyards and 16 active monasteries standing there since the 15th century. Declared a national park in 1960, this “Serbian Holy Mountain” covers 25,525 hectares of forest, has over 1000km of marked trails, 200km of bike routes, 16 monasteries and hundreds of wineries producing some of Vojvodina’s best wines.

Fruška Gora National Park is not for those looking for “Instagram waterfalls” or “selfie viewpoints”. This is for people who like to walk through the forest, stop at monasteries, drink rakija with the friars, tour a winery and return with a basket of mushrooms or a bottle of tambaška beskaravka. Perfect for a day trip from Novi Sad or Belgrade (1 hour drive), or a full weekend in nature without needing 2000m high mountains.

Where Fruška Gora National Park is located and how to get there

Fruška Gora National Park is located between Novi Sad and the Croatian border, between the Danube and Sava, spanning about 80km in length. Main entrances are at Rakovac or Irig villages, 30-40km from Novi Sad, about 1 hour drive from Belgrade. From Belgrade take E70 motorway towards Novi Sad, Irig or Rakovac exit – excellent road, no hairpins, plains with vineyards. Parking available at every monastery and viewpoint. From Novi Sad local road towards Srijem takes 30 minutes to the first monastery. Buses run regular lines Novi Sad – Irig – Rakovac – Stara Pazova, but for deeper park areas you need a car or taxi. By bike, Novi Sad – Fruška Gora has marked Euro Velo routes of 50-70km one way. Best to come by car since monasteries are not all on one line, and you want flexibility for trails and wineries.

16 monasteries of Fruška Gora National Park: each has its story

Fruška Gora is called “Serbian Holy Mountain” because it has 16 monasteries built between the 15th and 18th centuries, mostly by monks fleeing the Turks. They are not just churches – they are museums, libraries, wineries, pharmacies. Krušedol from 1520 is the largest with Branković tombs and icon museum. Rakovac from the 16th century has waterfalls right next to it and friars’ rakija. Vrdnik from the 14th century is known for its holy water spring and medicinal herbs. Novo Hopovo from the 15th century impresses with architecture and frescoes. Grgeteg from the 15th century on a hill offers Danube views. Divša from the 16th century is quiet with forest right next to it. Beočin from the 15th century is near wineries with easy access. In each you get rakija, water, honey, sometimes a story from the monks. Entrance free, donations welcome. Monasteries are active, living, working.

Hiking trails and activities in Fruška Gora National Park

Fruška Gora National Park has 1000km of marked trails, from easy 2km walks to 35km marathon trail. Easy trails lead from Rakovac to waterfalls and streams in 1 hour, or Vrdnik to the spring through forest in 1.5 hours. Stražilovo viewpoint is 3km walk with Srijem panorama. Medium tours of 10-15km go from Krušedol to Novo Hopovo or follow “Fruška Gora marathon” mini variants.
